It's not like you can't tell the movies but people in Brockport are upset that a new traffic light pole was installed right in front of the historic Strand Theater marquee.
The problem is a big black traffic light pole right in front of the historic movie marquee.
Even the theater owner can't believe it which is why the marquee now reads, "why was this pole installed in front of our marquee?"
Good question.
"Dumb is the nicest word I can think of to say what it looks like," Anthonyjoseph Rios said. Rios lives in Brockport and walks by the theater almost everyday. "I think this is one of the grandest old towns I've ever lived in. I come from the catskill mountains. What they did here is unconscionable! They took away from one of the historic looks that this town has and that's this old strand theater."
The traffic pole went up as part of the Route 19 re-development project. It's a state job and there's a new pole on every corner at this intersection. One village official admits he just didn't see the problem on paper.
"As a trustee should I have looked closer? I think I've learned a valuable lesson and these are questions that need to be asked," Trustee Scott Hunsinger said. He hopes the pole can be moved before the project is done.
"You're not looking at the sign. You're not looking at the movies we're blessed with having here. But you're looking at the pole first. It's the first thing that catches your attention," he said.
This theater opened in 1900. The marquee went up in 1946. And the first time -- it's not the first thing you see.
"Somebody wasn't thinking and they should pay for it to remove it three feet over," Rios said. "Move the lights over on the pole a little bit and it will not cover the Strand." 03 >
We talked to the theater owner on the phone today. William Yantz says he had no idea this was going to happen. As far as the message on the marquee? He said it was the best way to get people's attention.
Part of the frustration is that the entire downtown is historic and we're told store owners have to jump through hoops just to put on a new door for instance. And all of a sudden, they say, the traffic light pole gets plopped down on one of the main corners.
The New York State Department of Transportation says the did the best they could. They say the current pole is better than the alternatives. The state is sympathetic to the people in Brockport but as far as a remedy -- the state says there isn't one.

I could retweet a ton of posts and I'm sure that would be fine, but I really enjoy the opportunity curating gives me to explain why I like a post as much as I do. What did the blogger say that really stuck with me? Why did I like the post so much? This helps my audience relate to the post, sure, but it's also my way of telling the blogger how I really feel about what he or she is up to. Without agenda, without intent other than to gather good content together, you can bring a smile to a blogger's face. What better foundation for community is there?
Now of course there are other benefits to curating content. If you do it a certain way maybe you get a lot of backlinks. Maybe you get traffic to your site. That's what a lot of people focus on. But for me, it's all about the community building.

The website is now a book "When Parents Text: So Much Said ... So Little Understood" (Workman, $10.95), and the women, both 23, are also in negotiations for a sitcom - hopefully one with a bit more staying power than "$#*! My Dad Says," the canceled CBS show based on the popular Twitter feed.
"In the beginning, it was just hilarious," Kaelin says. But soon they realized how these misfires symbolized a transitional moment in their lives, the push-pull between adolescence and adulthood, between the comforts and the constraints of home.
This realization just might have coincided with their need to put together a meaningful book proposal. But that doesn't make it any less true.
"I'm back at home," Kaelin says, "and all my mom wants to do is feed me, and I want to be picked up from the train station and I want two tacos."
"When Parents Text" easily could have been one of those bathroom books, good for a few laughs while one attends to more pressing business. Look at it instead as an epistolary bildungsroman in which our guileless hero stumbles into technological maturity (Mom: My fingers are saying words. This is amazing.) under the tutelage of a long-suffering master. Much virtual eye-rolling ensues.
Actual eye-rolling is in full effect one recent afternoon when the webmasters gather with their parents in the Fraiolis' windowed breakfast nook before a local book signing - like when Tom Fraioli, a garrulous tennis and ice hockey coach, thanks his daughter and Kaelin for keeping his gaffes anonymous, then recounts to a visitor a few of his more embarrassing ones.
In the book, the nameless Moms and Dads come across as Mr. Magoo-like figures, careening wildly about the technological landscape, giddily tangling with predictive text (Dad: Mom made soft rice steamed neocolonialism. Dad: broccoli) and other tricky features like automated responses:

Me: Are you sending me random quick texts again?

"We took a hit for our kids' success," Tom Fraioli good-naturedly grumbles.
It was only weeks after the website's launch in November that the two began fielding publishing offers and development deals. Kaelin, a Smith College grad who majored in art history, was working as an intern at the New Museum in New York, and Fraioli's anthropology and political science degree from the University of Vermont well-equipped her for the high-stakes world of suburban babysitting.
Mark Kaelin says he still can't quite believe it when the words "my agent" come out of his daughter's mouth.
By May, they had pocketed their advance and moved out.
The women are still best friends (and with their matching ivory complexions, shoulder-length brown hair and geek-chic glasses, they're often mistaken for sisters) and now they are partners in a thriving - bewilderingly so - business. When they saw "The Social Network," about the personal fallout among the founders of Facebook, Kaelin turned to Fraioli and said, "I'm never going to do this to you."
Fraioli nods at Kaelin and smiles wryly. "She's Mark Zuckerberg."
The website continues to grow - they've recently introduced ads - and Kaelin and Fraioli post several submissions a day, screening out the dirtier ones. ("I don't know who those parents are," Fraioli says. "It just doesn't sound ... good.")
According to quarterly surveys conducted by marketing research firm Insight Express, 65 percent of adults ages 45 to 54 text at least once a week, up from 24 percent four years ago. And as the older generation becomes more adept at texting, the autofill blunders - the reminder to pick up sandwich bags that somehow becomes a request for lunch maggots - have become less common, and some parents have even begun pimping their own tech savvy.

In his introduction to the budget, finance minister Jan Kees de Jager states that the effects of the previous economic crisis were almost entirely absorbed by the government and industry. But the man in the street was largely unscathed, enjoying an increase in spending power of around 2%, De Jager said.
Uncertain times
Those days are over, the finance minister wrote in the main document, entitled Koersvast in onzekere tijden (staying on track in uncertain times). The state debt has soared, spending on healthcare is booming and the new eurozone crisis threatens the treasury again.
'The buffers have gone. We cannot continue to pass the bill on to the next generations,' De Jager said. The cabinet aims to get government spending in order and the effect of many already agreed cuts will become apparent next year.
Analysts say middle income households will feel the cuts most, as child, housing and healthcare benefits are cut, and there is less money available for child care. Healthcare premiums will also rise next year, as agreed in the coalition deal.
In total the government plans to make 5.8bn-worth of spending cuts and savings next year, while spending will go up by around 1bn. New cuts will be inevitable if the Greece crisis continues, De Jager said.
