SEO | BranchOut SEO Making Push With Vanity URLs

BranchOut, the Facebook-friendly professional network LinkedIn That aspire to kill, IS branching out for itself. It 's pushing pages out to icts Their Own Google-friendly URLs and users Giving Their Own vanity domains.

If you 'd like to grab your branchout name, the company made an early reservation HAS system available to the first 500 People Who cnet@branchout.com e-mail. Send a note and THEY There 'll send you back instructions to claim your URLs Presumably Something Nice You Can Put On Your resume, like branchout.com / JOEBOB

I like BranchOut 's positioning. It 's setting up Itself as the network jobs for everyone, not just for the professional class That ' s Already on LinkedIn. CEO Rick IS going Marini After Class of Workers, like soldiers from deployment and Returning Students new to the job market, Who aren 't on LinkedIn and Who are not about to be. Their World is Facebook. And as work and professional lives are merging, Marini wants to Bring Them to the professional network, INSTEAD of seeing 'em to go get it Elsewhere, Where THEY ' ll Have To rebuild Their connections.

"They 're all playing Farmville, " says Marini of people starting job searches. He 's just a job network Giving Them Where THEY ' re Already hanging out. It 's thesis priced right for users, too: free.

Currently BranchOut IS Much More Than a personal "about " page. It HAS job listings, endorsements, and Other professional functions. Order in the small space summary page, it HAS Already Competitors, like About.me (Acquired by AOL), and the startup Zerply, According To Which Zerply CEO Christofer Karltorp IS Converging on the Same space as BranchOut. It 's just about starting with the page as STI "minimum viable product. "

Both BranchOut Zerply Reflect more modern and Sensibilities Than LinkedIn, Especially When It Comes to Ease of connecting to people. That if you covered any one put a profile up on thesis services, you want to Be contacted, and Neither service puts a pay wall Between You and People Who Might want to contact you. "Paying to connect Makes No Sense In The Web generation, " says Karltop.

Paying for resume spiff like custom themes, though, Is Another Story. Expect to get services thesis freemium features Such as That.

The Whole network professional game is a giant SEO play, Which is a big Reason That All of These Sites, Including LinkedIn users push to endorse Their friends. The more the network of people were linking to one Service is Other, the more Google juice the service has. And the people are more findable thesis on services, the THEY Become more - their hope CEOs - need our share of online, professional images.

Most days my inbox at least includes one 'link exchange' or 'purchase text link' request, by year Camouflaged Often Inaccurate subject line.Emails Relating to link swapping and link buying come in shapes and sizes: various, from the aggressive to the ever- Slightly embarrassed social.

I've Always ignore emails thesis I do not sell text links, and I don 't think Much of reciprocal linking, aussi Because The purpose messaging is so poor. There are 10 Probably common templates in email traffic, as Many of These sucky 'Requests link ' look very similar. THEY tend to Be a combination of bad science, fake charm and dodgy grammar.

Here are Some real world examples of 'link request' email so You Can see what I mean ...

The dubious charms

"I've enjoyed Greatly looking-through your site ... "

The relevancy fail

"I find your website quite falling to my partner 's websites, so I ' m really interested in. Knowing If You Would Agree to place a simple link on it. In exchange, i could offer you a link at: www. awebsitetotallydifferentfromyours.com. "

Blinded by PageRank

"I 've found your website with the' reverse google pagerank algorithm 'Which Indicate That Both Would we get better google rankings, When We exchange links. "

Taking Liberties (with grammar, too)

"I 've Already Gone ahead and added your site to our link directory, please verify you Could the description Before It Will Go at life. "

Really?

"As you know, reciprocal linking Benefits Both of us by raising our search rankings and more traffic to Generating Both of our sites. "

The Spaniard

"If a roommate enlace usted en su pagina yo colocaria a home in the embraces of siguiente URL. "

Meanwhile, in a land of unicorns ...

"*******. Com Is An information rich website about fairies, pixies, and Other Mythical creatures. "

Not exactly 'upfront'

"I 'd like to pay a fixed price upfront for a full year of advertisement placement; oz Placed the link has-beens I pay you by your choice, Either PAYPAL or by check, whichever you like. "

Is That a Fact?

"These links Will Improve Your site 's visibility in search engines like Google and Yahoo. "

Copy and paste sucks

"I 've just visited your music website I Was wondering if you ' d Be Interested in Exchanging links with my website. "

The massive shouty spammy caveat

"PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT A SPAM OR AUTOMATED EMAIL, IT 'S ONLY A REQUEST FOR A LINK EXCHANGE. YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS HAS BEEN ADDED TO ANY NOT LIST, AND YOU WILL NOT BE CONTACTED AGAIN. IF YOU ' D MAKE SURE TO LIKE WE DON 'T YOU CONTACT AGAIN, PLEASE FILL IN THE FOLLOWING FORM: emailsnomore (dot) com, PLEASE ACCEPT OUR APOLOGIES FOR YOU Contacting. "

Mr Straight-To-The-Point

"I'm writing to you on Behalf of a Client Who is Interested in Purchasing a text link advertisement on your website ... "

Take it or leave it

"Our offer IS 250 USD for a 12-month placement. "

Dominant and direct

"The Desired text link is Intended to Be at APPEAR Resources / Sponsors / blogroll section at home page and / or across the site. The purpose is 1 - to Have a backlink from your site, and 2 - the link must do-Be follow. "

Old posts FTW

"I was wondering if you Would Be Interested in hosting a text link for an affiliate of mine, Possibly in a past post? It Would Simply Need To Be That Is a keyword linked, not Their company name. We 'd be happy to Compensate you for your time! "

If you 're going to request text links then I think a direct approach is Key Personalised, Which Is Why I prefer oven thesis examples to the ones listed Above. What do you think?

Traffic To Your Website | How To Google-Proof Your Website

I know, kind of a strange post name, right? Who would want to "Google-Proof" their website? Don't you want Google to love your website?

The answer is "Yes," of course you do. What I mean by "Google-Proofing" your website is simply prot ecting yourself from Google's algorithm update s - making sure that you never lose any search engine traffic because of an algorithm update .

You are likely aware of Google's most recent "Panda" update that hammered a lot of huge si tes such as EzineArticles, Hubpages, and Mahalo, along with tons of smaller site s (including, unfortunately, one of my own). And I'm sure that at least a few readers of Incom eDiary had their sites hit as well.

The reason for this update was to filter out low quality content from Google's search results. The reason for this is not to "screw the little guy" or ruin your affil iate earnings - it's simply a way for Google to help provide it's customers (meaning, searchers, NOT affiliates or adverti sers) with a better search experience. And if they have a better search experien ce, they are much more likely to use Google again to search - and not defect to another search engine like Bing or Yahoo. And, ultimately, the goal is that the more that people use Google, the more people will click on Google's ads, making the company more profit.

Whi le this update was a painful experience for a lot of people, it did actually pro vide some benefits for internet marketers who put in a little extra effort. Spec ifically, this algorithm update removed a TON of spammy, low quality sites (no t every bad site, unfortunately) from the competition . Which means that a lot of keywords that were filled with spammy, low quality sites are now wide open - and ultimately, for the internet marketer who wants to put in a little extra effort to make sure he's "Google-Proofed," ripe for the picking.

The truth is this: this is not the last time Google is going to make an algo rithm update. If you do not have your site setup properly, then you are putting yourself at risk of losing search engine traffic at any time, basically at the w him of Google. While one might argue that if you are relying on search engine tr affic, you are always at the "whim" of Google and are putting yourself at risk - there are ways to mitigate that risk, and prevent your site from being hammered from any future algorithm updates. Not ev ery site got hit by the Panda update - IncomeDiary's search engine traffic actually has doubled in the past 6 months from 5,000 search engine visitors a week to 10,000 - so what made these sites protect ed? And what will keep these sites protected in the future?

It all boils down to just a few, specific things.

1. More Emphasis on Social Facto rs

While the jury is still out on Google +1′s success, you better believe that Google is movin g more toward social factors like Facebook likes, Tweets, Stumbles and +1′s. If Google making it's own social network isn't proof enough to you that Google is focusing more on the social aspects of sear ch, then I don't know what is. It's extremely important to have these social buttons on your site, and you want to ESPECIALLY make sure that you have the +1 button setup in a prominent s pot so that you can get the most +1′s possible. Google has experimented a ton with re-ranking sites based on how many +1′s they have – and it's likely that they will continue to put heavy emphasis on boosting sites that have a lot of +1′ed content. Make sure that you are getting your subscribers to "Like" and "+1″ your content - do NOT leave this out of your strategy.

2. NO D uplicate Content

This has been a rule for a long time now, though it seems that Google is now much more stringent and penalizing sites more heavily for duplicat e content. So make sure your SEO strategy doesn't rely around duplicate, automated content - because this will NOT work and only get your site penalized in the search engines.

3. LONG, Hig h Quality Content

According to my buddies over at SERPIQ.com, they ran a study o f 15,0Ǡ keywords, and found that on average the top 10 results for those 15,000 keywords all had over 2,000 words of content on the page that ranked in the top 10. One thing to keep in mind is that it's not necessarily one 2,000 word article - but 2,000 words of cont ent on the entire page. So for example, on IncomeDiary's homepage - there are paragraph long previews of pos ts that add up to over 2,000 words of content - so to Google, it's a page with over 2ꯠ words of content. The survey data doesn't lie – longer content ranks better. Plain and simple. Just make sure that it's high quality, (i.e. written over an 8th grade level), it has different forms of media if possible (videos, images), and that it gets shared (like I mentioned before!). Ultimately G oogle wants you to put REAL EFFORT into providing a high quality experience for your website visitors. If you can do that – they WILL reward you with more search engine tra ffic.

4. Strong Emphasis on On-Site Fundamentals

Again, as Google's algorithm's are constantly refined, high quality, useful, and interesting content is always going to be rewarded. Howeve r, it's impossible to have your high quality and interesting content rewarded if your on-site SEO is setup improperly. If Google cannot interpret your content and know exactly what keywords to give you traffic for, then your high quality content will get you ZERO search engine traffic. And sticking to these strong on-site fundamenta ls will help make sure that your site not only GETS ranked, but it KEEPS it's rankings through all future algorithm changes.

The real truth is, if you want to rank for high traffic, high profit keywords, you need to make sure that your on-site SEO is up to par (because your competition's DEFINITELY is). Without proper on-site SEO, you're building your site wit hout a proper foundation.

"So, where can I learn more and make sure that I'm setting up my site for success in the long term?"

Well, we've got a program called The WordPress SEO Blueprint in which my business partner (Tom Lambert) and I go through everything we do and have done to get our WordPress sites ranking at the top of the search engines - and how you can do the same with your own WordPress sites. It's an incredib ly useful and easy to follow resource that will have you ranking your sites at t he top of the search engines in no time - and I promise that it will help fully protect you from future algorithm updates.

So check it out , and let us know if you have any questions in the com ments section!

Backlinks | Understanding Your Backlink Profile

As SEO's and internet marketers, understanding and knowing the value of backlinks is one of the key aspects of our job. However, many articles I read and people that I talk to, really don't understand it's not just the links that matter.

It's a variety of factors that make up your back link profile and how much of that "agrees" with other parts that is important. Here are some of those factors:

Where is the link on the page, is it in the template or content part of the page

Is the link on the home page, a deep page, a page with a lot of outbound links pointing to it (ie a link hub)

Does the page the link is on have a strong social profile, is it tweeted regularly, seen on Facebook, mentioned on Google+, or clicked on in Gmail

Does the page rank the link is on rank for competitive or high volume terms, and is it sending click through data or toolbar data to Google

Is the page the link is on crawled regularly (check the cache date)

Is the page the link is on

What about the anchor text, is there a natural distribution of phrases to the website/page or is it tightly focused around a few narrow terms so it looks manipulated

Are the incoming links distributed around the site with natural looking "clumps", or is it focused only on commercial pages

What about link growth over time, is it slow and steady with a few spikes, or does it spike like someone bought links when a quarterly advertising budget got approved

How many of the links to the site are reciprocal

Are there links to the sites from older trusted directories, like Yahoo, BOTW, or lii.org

Are there links to the website mostly from trusted websites, or low quality splogs and article directories

I've been doing SEO for over a decade, and while I don't know everything, I've been around the block long enough to know what a good backlink profile looks like compared to a bad one. When I'm at conference doing a site audit one of the things I look at is a site's backlink profile using Open Site Explorer or Majestic SEO. I can tell right away when something isn't up to snuff. In this post I'll show you some of the key things that should jump out at you right away when you look at your backlink profile.

Full disclosure: search engines consider buying links, with cash or cash in-kind exchanges (like buying someone a new iPad) is a violation of their policies. This violation may cause the link to get discounted on the low end of the penalty scale, or have the site completely removed from the index if Google thinks the violations are flagrant. I'm not going to claim that I've never paid for links or be naive and tell you that they don't work. However I am going to say it's high risk behavior. If you do it, you should be fully aware of what you are doing, and know the penalty if you get caught.

The problem is most people buy links in a stupid manner. They get a monthly/quarterly ad budget approved, run out to a high profile link broker, and buy a bunch of links, cross it off their to do list, and start playing angry birds.

Instead what you really should do is buy links slowly over a longer period time. Link buyers also put way to much focus on commercial keywords and destination URLs, without mixing them up and creating diversity. It's incredibly easy to see, with tools available to you today.

Here's what it looks like when you buy links in an obvious way:

…Now how do I know those links were bought, and not a social media success?

By looking at the anchor text concentration and destination URL.

I don't have access to the data that Google does, but if those links were natural they would have SERP click through data and toolbar data that matches up with the link growth … and I bet they don't.

As a link buyer you want to buy permanent links. As a link seller you want monthly income. Link buying is a seller's market. While links do magically appear, change and disappear across the web, the more link buying you do the more things tend to appear/disappear. This link churn sticks out, and doesn't help your overall link profile. In fact a significant amount of link churn may cause your website to fall off the map as far as Google is concerned.

Even if you aren't buying links, and you are building links "naturally" it's still possible to have "too much of a good thing" as far as anchor text and destination URL focus is concerned. If your links do come from other people, who do give them to you with no action on your part, there will be a wide focus on inbound anchor text.

Recently an article was published here on SEJ where the author claimed it was impossible for someone else to sabotage your website with links . I'm going to say that author is misinformed.

The ability to sabotage someone else is dependent on how strong their link profile is. Trusted websites like CNN, Ford, and Engadget have backlink profiles so strong you will never be able to damage them. But say, a mom and pop dog groomer, you probably could. If the guy is buying some links and not being to careful how he is doing it … depending how close he is to the edge, you might be able to push him off the cliff if you tried, knew the right people, and had access to right tools.

Now I'm not advocating this behavior, I think it's pretty unethical, and I am a big believer in karma. However hypothetically speaking: with a decent budget, some flagrant link buys, in a short time period, with highly concentrated anchor text, focused at one or two pages, and you will be on the path to doing some real damage to their backlink profile.

I'm going to tell you it's a dark path that is not easy, and could backfire if you don't know what you are doing. These aren't the only things you'll need to do, but giving you any more information would be professionally irresponsible. So you'll just have to trust me I have absolutely seen it done, it's highly effective, and it's not pretty.

Please don't write to me, tweet me, or drop me a private message asking for more info or how to do it. Even though I may "know a guy" like I said, I don't advocate it, and I am not going to help you do it. Anyways the guys who do engage in this behavior have an omert code , you have to earn your own way in, and like mob activity nobody likes a guy with a big mouth blabbing about who is doing what. Google doesn't like it, and prefers not talking about it. But if you read their guidelines you see they left themselves an out with the word "almost".

There's almost nothing a competitor can do to harm your ranking or have your site removed from our index. If you're concerned about another site linking to yours, we suggest contacting the webmaster of the site in question. Google aggregates and organises information published on the web; we don't control the content of these pages.

So what should you take away from this post:

Looking at backlinks is a complicated, holistic process

You need to look at factors like placement, age, destination, anchor text, growth, link strength, social signals to name a few

When building links try not to focus too hard on any one keyword or page, try to look as natural as possible with lots of variation.

Avoid link buying as it violates Google's guidelines

If you do violate the guidelines try to be smart about how you do it and be aware of the consequences of those actions

Check your backlink profile regularly. If it looks like someone is trying to sabotage you, let Google know ASAP.
